Lessons of the Square Watermelon

I got this forwarded e-mail from a friend and I found it very interesting and worth sharing so I'm posting it here to hopefully impart some useful lessons.

Japanese grocery stores had a problem . They are much smaller than their US counterparts and therefore don't have room to waste. Watermelons, big and round, wasted a lot of space . Most people would simply tell the grocery stores that watermelons grow round and there is nothing that can be done about it . But some Japanese farmers took a different approach . "If the supermarkets want a space efficient watermelon," they asked themselves, "How can we provide one?" It wasn't long before they invented the square watermelon .

The solution to the problem of round watermelons wasn't nearly as difficult to solve for those who didn't assume the problem was impossible to begin with and simply asked how it could be done . It turns out that all you need to do is place them into a square box when they are growing and the watermelon will take on the shape of the box .

This made the grocery stores happy and had the added benefit that it was much easier and cost effective to ship the watermelons . Consumers also loved them because they took less space in their refrigerators which are much smaller than those in the US - which resulted in the growers being able to charge a premium price for them.

What does this have do with anything besides square watermelons? There are a few lessons that you can take away from this story which will help you in all parts of your life . Here are a few of them:

DON'T ASSUME: The major problem was that most people had always seen round watermelons so they automatically assumed that square watermelons were impossible before even thinking about the question . Things that you have been doing a certain way your entire life have taken on the aura of the round watermelon and you likely don't even take the time to consider if there is another way to do it . Breaking yourself from assuming this way can greatly improve your overall life as you are constantly looking for new and better ways to do things .

QUESTION HABITS: The best way to tackle these assumptions is to question your habits . If you can make an effort to question the way you do things on a consistent basis, you will find that you can continually improve the way that you live your life . Forming habits when they have been well thought out is usually a positive thing, but most of us have adopted our habits from various people and places without even thinking about them .

BE CREATIVE: When faced with a problem, be creative in looking for a solution . This often requires thinking outside the box. Most people who viewed this question likely thought they were being asked how they could genetically alter water melons to grow square which would be a much more difficult process to accomplish . By looking at the question from an alternative perspective, however, the solution was quite simple . Being creative and looking at things in different ways in all portions of your life will help you find solutions to many problems where others can't see them .

LOOK FOR A BETTER WAY: The square watermelon question was simply seeking a better and more convenient way to do something . The stores had flagged a problem they were having and asked if a solution was possible . It's impossible to find a better way if you are never asking the question in the first place . Always ask if there is a better way of doing the things that you do and constantly write down the things you wish you could do (but currently can't) since these are usually hints about steps you need to change . Get into the habit of asking yourself, "Is there a better way I could be doing this?" and you will find there often is .

IMPOSSIBILITIES OFTEN AREN'T: If you begin with the notion that something is impossible, then it obviously will be for you . If, on the other hand, you decide to see if something is possible or not, you will find out through trial and error .

Our Summer Get-away

Summer time means vacation time.  Every year we take time out of our hectic schedules to get-away to another state or country. This year is especially exciting for my husband and I because it will be our first time to travel with our little toddler.  It is quite busy in our household lately, and it is almost impossible to sit down and take a look into travel destinations, hotel accommodations and the likes.  It's good to know that there is a perfect solution to making hotel bookings very easy for me.  EasyToBook.com saves the day for me, with its wide array of hotels to choose from, it definitely covers all my booking needs in the places we planned to see.  Booking at any Zurich Hotels, Amsterdam Hotels and Barcelona Hotels  was definitely a breeze.

In Zurich we will visit the Zurich Toy Museum which I'm sure my son will enjoy tremendously; the must see Swiss National Museum; and the famous Old Town. Amsterdam has so many names attached to it like the "Venice of the North" and  the "City of Rembrandt" which makes it more interesting to see.  Having been under the Spanish rule for a long time and our culture is obviously Spanish influenced, I have been longing to see the city of Barcelona to experience first hand its authentic culture, so to Barcelona we go. For a busy mom like myself, EasyToBook.com really made my life very easy.

Busy As Usual - What's New

I have not been posting here lately, I'm sorry but my schedule is really tight, not to mention the enormous chore of maintaining 5 blogs.  Until now, I still can't figure out what I was thinking creating more than one blog .  This bravejournal blog is my baby, being the very first blog that I created back in 2006 while waiting for my school work to start. Then I got hooked for four months and then finally went on hibernation.  But I when I came back, I came back in full force obviously.  I came back when paid blogging is the fad and I couldn't resist joining the band wagon.  This is my online diary and there are lots of things to talk about here, too many things on my mind to express but just too little time, I also have a toddler to focus my time and energy on when awake.  Yup, he's equivalent to 5 blogs and more!!

If you happen to be visiting here for the first time, you can also check out my other babies

Vacation Time Once Again

One of the many things that my husband and I love to do together is to travel.  Every summer we take time out of our busy schedules to relax and have some time all to ourselves and visit different tourists destination either within the US or outside of US.  It is really our dream to take a European escapade and we are looking into visiting Munich, Barcelona and Rome.  But since he is so busy with work and I'm too busy with mothering and homemaking as well, we seem to not get the chance to even look into vacation accommodations.  It's good to know how EasyToBook.com can help us in our present predicament.  EasyToBook.com can make one's life a breeze, it provides a wide selections of Munich hotels, Barcelona Hotels and Rome hotels in different tourist spots that we planned to visit.  EasyToBook.com is the answer to all our hotel reservation needs .

Boston Celtics Rules!

This is the time I've been waiting for. Winning at home is such a sweet thing. The spirit of the Celtics Nation is really soaring. Boston Celtics embarrassed the LA Lakers in Game 6 of the 2008 NBA Finals winning 131-92. This is the biggest margin in the NBA finals history. The magic of Kobe Bryant who is tagged as the best player in the planet did not work this time. The Celtics defense was so tight and precise, the team work of the big-3 of the new generation -Pierce, Garnett and Allen was so unstoppable and the over-all teamwork was really perfect. This is the 17th title of the Celtics won on the 17th of June, what is more perfect than that?

Coach Doc Rivers was very superstitious about not touching the trophy before being even declared the champions, he wanted it to be handed to him as the real champions and so it was. Paul Pierce won the MVP award for his most distinguished performance in the championship series. This win is really about selflessness, team effort and defense. The players didn't outshine each other but worked for the team to really return to glory. The whole of the Celtics nation is rejoicing on this 17th title after 22 long years. We definitely have returned to Glory. Congratulations to Boston Celtics for being the 2008 NBA champions!
